Background CpG islands are discrete clusters of unmethylated CpG dinucleotides found in the human genome that control gene expression by binding transcription factors. CGBO is a widely expressed binding protein that requires the CpG dinucleotide to bind DNA. CGBP binds strictly to unmethylated CpG motifs and acts as a transcription activator. The CXXC domain of this protein is conserved in DNA methyltransferase, human trithorax, and methyl-CpG binding protein (MBP), and is involved in DNA-binding. CGBO has other domains involved in protein-protein interactions, yet more study is needed to determine the function.
