BackgroundInformation HistonesarethechiefproteincomponentsofchromatininBIOLOGy.TheyactasspoolsaroundwhichDNAwinds,andalsoplayaroleingeneregulation.ThecorehistonesincludeH2A,H2B,H3,andH4.Histonesundergopost-translationalmodifications,whichaltertheirinteractionwithDNAandnuclearproteins.TheH3andH4histoneshavelongtailsprotrudingfromthenucleosome,whichcanbecovalentlymodifiedatseveralplaces.Modificationsofthetailincludemethylation,acetylation,phosphorylation,ubiquitination,sumoylation,citrullination,andADP-ribosylation(H2Acanalsobemodified).Combinationsofmodificationsarethoughttoconstituteacode,theso-called"histonecode."Histonemodificationsactindiversebiologicalprocessessuchasgeneregulation,DNArepairandchromosomecondensation(mitosis).
